Market Sessions and a Daily Routine
Use market-session awareness and a short preparation routine to reduce random screen time and impulsive decisions.
Learning objectives
- Name the major forex trading sessions
- Explain why activity changes through the day
- Build a repeatable pre-session checklist
Forex trading runs across global business centres rather than through one central exchange. Activity is often described using the Asia, London, and New York sessions. Participation and volatility can change as one region opens, overlaps another, or closes.
Session times shift relative to South African Standard Time when countries enter or leave daylight-saving time. Use a current market-hours source instead of memorising one set of clock times for the entire year.
Match the session to the instrument
Different currency pairs may be more active when the regions connected to them are open. Important economic announcements can also override typical session behaviour. Session awareness is context, not a signal by itself.
A simple preparation routine
Before your chosen observation window:
- Check the economic calendar for high-impact events.
- Mark major higher-timeframe levels and current market structure.
- Write down the conditions required for a valid setup.
- Define the maximum risk allowed for the session and for each trade.
- Decide what conditions mean no trade.
After the window closes, save a chart image and record whether you followed the plan. Review decision quality separately from profit or loss.
Reduce unnecessary exposure
Watching every tick can create the feeling that action is required. A defined observation window makes it easier to wait, avoid low-quality periods, and maintain a normal routine outside trading.
Practice
Choose one two-hour observation window that fits your responsibilities. For five sessions, record the instrument, scheduled news, market condition, and whether your written setup appeared. Use historical charts or a demo environment.
Key takeaway
A session routine narrows attention and creates evidence for review. It does not predict price, but it helps the trader make fewer unplanned decisions.
